My dear friend Laura is visiting with her sweet daughter Lily from the U.K. We spent the day with the kids in Oakland enjoying the sunshine and a noisy chicken from a neighboring yard. Pretty as it was the day started off with a bit of a disaster. A highway overpass was melted away by a crashed fuel truck in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Laura called to tell us the news fairly early on, and she wondered if it was too much to ask of us to drive from Berkeley to Oakland. Heck no! We made our way over with bagels in hand and it was lovely.
The last of the kittens we've been fostering for the Milo Foundation will be heading off to a wonderful home in Napa. This is the second family we've fostered and I'm sure we'll do it again. Milo is always looking for foster families in the bay area for both young families and adult dogs or cats, www.milofoundation.org.
Really, it's not twitter. It's cingular ... worse, AT&T. I thought we had parted years ago ... I feel like I am being stalked ... victimized all over again.
I've been going to conferences, pondering the fate of the world and doing my part to make healthcare easier. Non-stop tales of celeb rehab have been heavy on my mind and I'm beginning to feel that even missing a day of popcult news might throw me back into the evil thresher of time. The kids are all very happy that the end of school is on the horizon and that summer is quickly approaching. Meanwhile, the adults struggle to find reasonable airfare smack in the middle of July and time for the Sopranos. Tudors are high up on the list, too but after only one episode we're hardly committed. What I'm really looking forward to: season 2 of the Brotherhood. Relevant family pictures have all been posted to flickr.
Daily afternoons visits to Kiahuna and Poipu beach made Kauai seem like home. The first day the surf was 10 feet, but gradually went down as the winter storms passed. The water was so warm and clean, and the fish that swam just a few feet off of the shore made us realize that we were just visitors to someone else's native habitat. The kids love the warm, clear water and bright skies. Late afternoon and sunset visits kept the kids out of the high noon sun and the water was always the perfect temperature. Sea turtles and seals sunned themselves at Poipu beach while tourists and beachcomers lingered around the yellow tape the park service rangers strung about the oblivious sea mammals. The girls borrowed inner tubes from another family and launched themselves into the Kiahuna beach lagoon area, which was just ahead of the reef break and below a line of soothing palm trees.
Finally getting around to posting photos from our trip to Kauai. From the SF Bay area it's an easy trip with direct flights to Honolulu. Kauai isn't overly-developed as of yet and has an amazing agricultural history that includes sugar cane, ranching and coffee (among other things). The botanical gardens are amazing, although we only got to see a small part of it due various meltdowns and an overwhealming desire to get back to the beach. More photos soon.
